At LKA Edits, the editing process is different from others out there.
I don't search for what is wrong with your story. I look for what is right and work with you to build on that to get you ready to submit or publish.
Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in professional writing, publishing and coaching, I work with writers in both fiction and non-fiction at all experience levels to improve storytelling.
Think of it as a story coach -- someone who not only reads and edits your finished manuscript, but someone who can also help you write it along the way by working through plot problems and character consistencies. Or, in the case of non-fiction, it's an award-winning journalist with 20 years of experience helping you report your book, interview your sources and structure your book proposal.

Hourly Coaching
You’re still writing. Maybe you haven’t even started writing, but you already need help. Need to work through some plot points? Want to bounce some ideas around or need help crafting a workable outline? I'm available for story consultation and brainstorming appointments by phone (or in person at conferences). We’ll start with a short written questionnaire that I will email to you. Once I get your answers back, we’ll schedule a time to chat to work through the trouble spots that are blocking your progress, using techniques that I teach at local, regional and national writing conferences.

The Is it Any Good? Edit
Your book is done, but you want to know if your story works. Right? That’s what you get with this edit. This editing package is a standard manuscript critique with a focus on major plot points, story structure, and character development. I will point out problem areas where you might consider changes (including scenes that should be cut or even added), and I’ll always explain my reasons. No line edits are included, although I have been known to point out glaring grammatical errors and typos. (I can’t help myself. I’m the kind of person who uses correct punctuation in all my texts.)

The Tight and Bright
That’s what we call line editing it in the news business. Make it tight and bright. It means focusing on the language of the story to empower your unique voice, and that’s what you get with this option. I’ll read your manuscript with an eye for readability – pointing out clichés, awkward phrasing, clunky or boring dialogue, dull sentence cadence, and inconsistencies that distract from the story. And hey, because I’m a cheerleader at heart, I’ll also point out the awesome stuff, so you’ll know what you’re doing right and what you can build upon. Finally I’ll identify major punctuation and grammatical errors.

The Deep Dive
This is my most comprehensive editing and consulting package. You get it all – the plot consultations and all the edits. We’ll start with a detailed questionnaire that you will fill out about your story and your characters. (And when I say Deep Dive, I MEAN Deep Dive. Be prepared to dig into your characters' backstories – their fears and motivations, their goals and hang-ups, everything we need to ramp up all the delicious conflict that makes your story un-put-downable. We’re even going to talk about your target market.) Then I will provide a detailed edit and critique, including all the editing services from The Basics and the Tight and Bright. We’ll follow-up with an hour-long phone call to discuss solutions to any plot or character problems I identify.
